Neurological Diagnosis and RepairTechnological Advances and Opportunities in Treatment of the Brain, Mind and Nerves

FEBRUARY 5, 2020

Mirret El-Hagrassy, MD will be the Moderator for our panel, who will present the science behind some of these advances, along with successful businesses resulting in this developing arena.

ABSTRACT

SIvica (Ivan) Ducic, MD, PhDUntil recently, the mainstay of nerve tissue repair was simply uniting the injured or cut ends of the damaged nerves. This is an ongoing challenge with uncertain outcome, prolonged recovery, and suboptimal function.

In early 2000’s, this delicate challenge was recognized by Axogen. This start-up applied the best science and engineering to advance, human nerve repair, resulting in a proprietary processing protocol.

Axogen developed a nerve graft with no cells, but with preserved normal nerve ultrastructure. The product, the Avance Nerve Graft, enables clinicians to repair injured nerves all over the body. This breakthrough from industry is changing the surgical treatment of nerve tissue injury.

Bill EdelmanHighland Instruments, a pre-commercial, privately held medical device company based in Cambridge, MA, has developed ESStim™, an innovative non-invasive neurostimulation technology with broad applicability for the management of chronic symptoms in large patient populations with persistent pain and movement disorders. He will provide an overview of ESStim™ and highlight clinical results in target patient populations and discuss commercial implementation strategies.

Leon Morales-Quezada, MD, PhDDr. Morales-Quezada will present the principles behind noninvasive brain stimulation, and current applications for neurological rehabilitation. He will discuss the technology development and the future of combined therapeutics with pharmacological and technology-driven interventions for neuromodulation.

Join Us for a discussion on the ongoing challenge of nerve repair – where we are now and the innovative potential solutions. The repair of, and relearning within, the Nervous System over the past two decades has opened unanticipated frontiers in restoring function in patients facing debilitating physical and psychological challenges. While complete cure is still the ultimate goal, technology has allowed injured nerves to regrow, lost brain function to be re-learned, and paralyzed patients to regain mobility and independence. Partnering between business and research is bringing these advances to the public, and presents unforeseen opportunities to the entrepreneur.
Bios of Our Distinguished Panel

Mirret M. El-Hagrassy, MD MODERATOR
Dr. El-Hagrassy is currently a post-doctoral research fellow at the Spaulding Neuromodulation Center, and Harvard Medical School. She is a US board-certified neurologist with special interest in epilepsy, post-traumatic epilepsy, EEG signal analysis, and non-invasive brain stimulation. She is a graduate of Cairo University Medical School. She completed her neurology training at SUNY Upstate University Hospital (Syracuse, NY), and clinical neurophysiology fellowship (EEG/Epilepsy track) at Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, Ohio).

Ivica (Ivan) Ducic, MD, PhD
Medical Director, AxogenDr. Ducic is working on joint efforts to improve the care of patients with complex nerve injuries. He is a board-certified plastic surgeon with expertise in nerve surgery. He received both his medical degree and his PhD degree in neurosciences from the University of Zagreb School of Medicine in Croatia. He trained in Plastic and Nerve Surgery in the US, and since 2003 has served as Professor of Plastic and Neurosurgery at Georgetown University. In 2014, he established the Washington Nerve Institute in McLean, VA, focused on surgical management of nerve injuries and chronic pain.

  Bill Edelman
Chairman of the Board – Highland Instruments, Inc., Paragonix Technologies, Inc., and Corsens, Inc.Mr Edelman also serves on the Advisory Council for the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has served in C-level and board positions of multiple companies and as an investment advisor in this space. Highland Instruments is a privately held medical device company pioneering the development and commercialization of Electrosonic Stimulation (ESStim™), an innovative noninvasive electrosonic brain stimulation technology for the treatment of brain-based movement disorders as well as chronic pain management. ESStim combines independently controlled electromagnetic and ultrasonic fields.

Leon Morales-Quezada MD, PhDDr. Morales-Quezada’s research interests focus on noninvasive neuromodulation, technology development and use of digital platforms to promote neurocognitive rehabilitation. He is also exploring the neurobiology of the placebo effect by applying physiological measurements on patients with severe pain. He received his MD from Universidad Autonoma de Aguascalientes Medical School in Mexico, and specialized in neurological rehabilitation and neuromodulation. He completed his PhD in Cognitive Neurosciences from De Montfort University in Leicester UK, and a Master’s in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health, while simultaneously completing a fellowship at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
